New Initiatives

Links with Secondary Schools

Whilst we have always enjoyed strong and supportive links with our local Secondary Schools, this year sees a huge leap forward as we embark on several exciting and mutually beneficial enterprises.

We are in the process of beginning a programme in both Literacy and Maths which provides enrichment and extension for some of our higher attaining children in Year 6.

Teachers from St Catherine’s and St Paul’s are devoting 1 hour each week to deliver sessions in Drama, Writing and Investigative Maths. Children will be introduced to the works of Shakespeare and high level Mathematical challenges – and what’s more, it will be lots of FUN!

2011 – 2012

From November 2011, the school’s Modern Foreign Language will be French.

Though it is not compulsory for Infant and EYFS classes to receive MFL teaching, all classes will receive 30 minutes of French teaching over the course of a week.

Head Boy & Head Girl

Pupils in Year 6 put themselves through the process of Head Girl and Head Boy elections with enormous maturity – and we were tremendously proud of them! The candidates had all worked hard on their election speeches which were thoughtful and inspiring.

Congratulations to both Kitty and Frankie who were voted in by staff and everyone in KS2. We wish them every success for the year ahead.

A Community of Readers and Writers

This year we continue to promote Reading for Pleasure among our children and their families.  All classes in KS1 and KS2 have visited, and will continue to make visits, to our local Library in Charlton.

Our School Library is now refurbished and looks lovely! We will continue to make this a priority within School as we try to build up our stock of good quality text.

A visit to our Local Library

In order to mark World Book Day, Years 2 and 6 visited the Library. We have all become members and, over time, so will everyone in School.

In the same week we bought books from the Book Fair and even gave away books for fee (to parents) to celebrate World Book Night – the power of books and the pleasures of reading.

Book Week – October 2010

As part of our emphasis on reading for pleasure, we at Our Lady of Grace had a fantastic Book Week which ended with everyone in School dressing up as a Book Character.

We have collected some of the Book Marks and Book Reviews from some KS1 and KS2 children and reproduced them here.

Our pictures show what a wonderful collection of Book Characters attended School on Friday!

2009 – 2010

Gardening Area

The children have been busy planting vegetables to be served as part of School lunches and to promote healthy eating.

St David’s class (Year 1) have planted some onions and some daffodil bulbs in our raised bed.  In the Spring term 2011 we will be looking at ‘how things grow’ and we will find out if our bulbs have grown.
