Homework Topic – Year 1: St David
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school for the spring term (even though the weather is not particularly spring like!)
During this term we shall be looking at ‘Homes and Houses through time (History) and in the second half of term we will be looking at different countries, their climate and how we would travel there (Geography). Materials and their properties will be taught in the first half of term (Science and Art/DT) ‘Growing plants’ in the second half (Science). Using a word bank and word processing (ICT) Being a friend (PSHE) and in Religious Education we will be learning about ‘Families and Celebrations’ including Baptism and in the second half of term ‘Following Jesus’ including the story of Holy Week. A detailed breakdown of these areas is posted outside the classroom. PE will continue to be on Mondays and Fridays, if the weather improves we will be outside for games after half term but for the first half term only indoor kit is required – please make sure it is labelled clearly.
It is really helpful if you can talk about the topics being covered and help them become meaningful, for instance chat about homes and houses in our area, maybe find out the age of your house and think about its past make comparisons between old and new. For Science discuss materials we use every day from silver foil to plastic and bricks for building. In ICT children should learn that information can be presented in different ways on the computer.
I want to thank you for continuing to read with your child. As you are aware it is important to encourage them to love books, and I know you have been doing this.Readingskills nurtured now will pay dividends in the future. We will be working on Phase 5 of the Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme of work you can look this up on the internet or ask me about it.
Please continue to encourage your child’s mathematical development – as well as subtraction and addition we will be looking at shape, handling data and time.
Thank you also for making sure homework is done each week, I will continue to send homework on Friday to be handed in on Wednesday – including spellings and maths work.
If you have any questions or problems please speak to me either before or after school or we can make an appointment for a longer chat.
Thank you again for all your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
MARY FITZPATRICK
